It’s Evolution my Friends
Just saw this asking the question of the moment about “blogs being the new forums?”. Well, it’s called evolution. Just as I posted about the Web 3.0 taking things into devolution mode, blogs being the new forums is simply evolution. Or is it? Keep reading on.
The real question should be “Did the BBS (Bulletin Board System) get over run by the internet?” or “Did message boards and FidoNET/FidoMail/Door System Games get replaced by the internet?” You see where I am going? It’s all evolving.
Not too many people had any commentary on the Web 3.0 people yesterday. That is okay. I too long for some of the things of the old days, but then again, I also want this internet to evolve. The 3.0 people brought up some valid points, but then again, I’ve browsed via Lynx before and it’s cool just viewing text.
I’ve used command line, wrote scripts, made DOS seem cool, coded in C and Java (nothing great, so don’t bother me to code you anything; because these days I ask the experts!), compiled via command line, etc.. etc.. etal. As I have said so many times over, Been there, Done that, … go read it on my MySpace Profile.
Would I trade anything in for the experiences of a Trash 80 (TRS-80) dropping my basic code to a cassette tape? Would I want to do that again? Are you friggin’ kidding me! I have even done a consulting sales gig one time in the early 1990’s at this law office which had these 8″ floppy disks. YES, I did not say 5 1/4 ” floppies, but 8 freakin’ inches of floppy!!
Would I want to do it again? No. Would I trade the actual experience of setting up a DEC-Net network with a VAX as the server? Then realizing that a dumb vt-320 terminal was just that – DUMB? Do you think I really want to go back to that again? No.
Now back to the original question. Sometimes I can get on a roll, and the nice thing about blogs, is that I can. People can leave comments, and sometimes they can be fun if a nice conversation is started. That all is cool.
Forums now. I don’t think they are dead persay, but I also think with a blog and the commenting that most have, why should there be extra work for the blogger? Do you think that I should also have to worry about what is going on over in the forums on the site? Yes, I was that too, a sysop of a BBS so .. the answer is – “No.” – Been there, Done that… you know the rest!
Forums and blogs. One isn’t better then the other, nor is one superior to the other. They are like the children that were spawned off from the message boards of the BBS networks. One child is the blog, the other one is the forum. They can intertwine harmoniously together, but they are better left alone on their own.
Technically Speaking, I think I speak from experience.
