Join the Legion or sheep follow other sheep
From this morning’s LA Times there is absolutely no surprise here. AT&T is now jumping on board to stop pirating. Now this is a classic case of the “sheep” that we are. I mean, why wait for other’s to announce this fact first? This is what I totally despise about corporate America. It’s the “sheep attitude” that management has.
It’s almost like most upper management in corporate America can’t think without someone else thinking first. Someone else making an announcement first. It is very comical to me at least to see one of the biggest telecommunications companies around to wait to announce this. They should have been one of the first to announce it.
Again, it seems that they waited on internet media players to jump up and make the call first. I believe this is a sign that corporate America believes that they have no pull anymore. I also think that they realize that in order to maximize their PR, they will wait until a big time internet company announces something first. One that has the respect of the online community.
Community is what this is all about. AT&T hasn’t leveraged the community aspect of being online. Yes, as proven a few years back, they still “own” the lines that we communicate on. That was proven very well in 2001 when they took back leased lines of the @home network.
Still, they haven’t managed to even break the sweat of internet entrepreneurs. In fact, they are an after thought. Yes, you own the lines we all use, but it’s like when you were younger. You had to ask for the keys to your parents car. Where you eventually went, was another story.
Technically Speaking, where is AT&T headed? iPhone mania? That will only be a blip as far this year is concerned. I think once the hoopla passes on that device, it will be back to everyone looking for more innovations, more social networks, and whatever else is of more interest than a company that should have been leading all along; turning into another “sheep”.
