Episode 6 notes:

Israel story

You might think that Israel’s continuing strife with the Palestinians would be a red flag for investors. Yet amid escalating violence, many of the country’s companies are thriving, pushing the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange to record levels. Even the takeover of the Gaza Strip by the Islamist Hamas movement in mid-June hasn’t slowed the momentum. The TA 25 index is up by 21% this year, reaching an all-time high on June 17.

Google Watches; the Kevin Bankston smoking story

Bloggers began buzzing about Bankston’s double-lightning-strike luck, and the two photos now appear all over the Internet. A Web search for “Kevin Bankston smokes” reveals more than 20,000 links. “I felt somewhat embarrassed and a bit spied upon,” says Bankston. “I am now thoroughly outed as a cigarette smoker.”

Daylife raises $8.3 million and news sites

Automated news aggregator site Daylife has raised $8.3 million in a second round of funding – despite less than enthusiastic initial reviews. It’s a sign that news aggregators or “memetrackers” as we like to call them, are still considered a lucrative space. Meanwhile, Digg is ripping through the top lists, with Compete’s latest data putting it ahead of Facebook with over 20 million unique monthly visitors.

Digg revolt

The Digg comment system is finally live, and boy are the Diggers upset about it. In a mini-uprising, a scaled-down version of the hex-key-digg-meltdown episode, many of the stories on Digg’s front page (some are buried now) and upcoming sections are protesting against Digg’s new comment system, which allows comment threading with more than one level of nesting, but automatically hides all the replies.

Apple iPhone news

It appears that Apple iPhone displays are going up at Apple Stores. TUAW noted that a “large, covered rectangular display” appeared at the 5th Avenue Apple Store last night. They’ve also posted a small gallery of images of the shrouded display. Apple Store employees were reportedly unable to give out any further information.

Business.com – $400 million!

The wires are buzzing with talk that the Business.com domain currently up for sale could go for a historic price. Even The Wall Street Journal has weighed in saying the domain could fetch $400 million. The idea that the right dot com name can help a site gain traction among users is nothing new, but I thought we had gotten over the obsession with spending large sums for a certain domain. A few thousand? Sure. But once you crack the $1 million mark, it might be time to look for other names.

Powerset

Powerset is a quixotic search engine company here in San Francisco that has convinced itself it can take on Google.

While Powerset gears up to release its search engine publicly later this year, it hopes to nurture an army of 50,0000 early testers, or “Powerlabbers,” to bang on different parts of it beforehand — the idea being that the converts will not only improve the product, but will help push it at launch.

No Headset movement

The NO HEADSET site is about JAJAH and it’s ability to place convenient VoIP calls without the need of a headset, installation, or any further equipment. We put up a site where users can send us videos of themselves “creatively disposing” of their headsets, which they no longer need since they now use JAJAH. The intention is to share and create fun and creative content from and for you – our users from all over the world. It’s a work in progress and based on your contributions and feedback it will develope in time. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

JajahTV

It’s an Internet based TV station which will run live and recorded shows, news, JAJAH stories and most notably, user-generated content (like videos of people dumping their headsets). JAJAH TV provides a further opportunity to give a glimpse behind the scenes; shows where our users dial-in live and ask questions about a certain feature, product, or new release and continue building an active community showing how JAJAH is used all over the world.
