Kijiji is going to challenge Craigslist. Good luck. The WSJ reported this yesterday, and TechCrunch took a stab at it. According to the Wall Street Journal:
Online auctioneer eBay Inc. has quietly opened a classifieds Web site in the U.S., its first foray stateside into an area that has been dominated by the scrappy Craigslist Inc.
On Friday, San Jose, Calif.-based eBay opened a U.S. version of Kijiji, the online-classifieds site it launched overseas in February 2005.
What I like about Craigslist is the simplicity, and yes, I like the ugly look.
Despite, or perhaps because of its ugly interface, Craigslist has been an enormous success in the United States, although notably not nearly as much elsewhere.
A great point is the fact that eBay is going to push Kijiji in everyone’s face; fast and furious. What that means is that all the eBay’rs will know about Kijiji and start using it right away. You will hear gushing reviews I’m most certain from eBay types. The sad thing is, that whole group is like a select cult.
The more tech savvy people have moved on from the darling eBay; it’s so year 2000 in many people’s minds. I’m not knocking eBay, but it’s a small audience that you are looking at still. Yes, in the millions, but I see more people moving past the eBay infatuation shortly after coming online.
Technically Speaking, Kijiji will gain some traction quickly due to the eBay power behind it, other than that, it will be an after thought for most. For Kijiji to remain a force or even a challenger to Craigslist, their plans for marketing need to go beyond eBay users.
