It’s quite funny how sometimes I’m so far ahead of everyone else that it takes the mainstream to realize the emperor really didn’t have clothes on. I have been stating my total thumbs down on Second Life for quite some time now. Not the game aspect, I think that is cool technology. My thumbs down has been the whole “business” aspect. In fact, I was one of the first probably in the blogosphere to state “Second Life is a freakin’ GAME!”
Did it really matter what I said back when everyone was in “gushing/huggy kissy mode” of Second Life? No. Of course not. Everyone was dismissing me as some old fart that didn’t know what I was talking about. I was some anti-gamer dude.
Yes, I’ll admit, I have never been a big fan of games. I like sport simulation games, war games, games of strategy, etc. As far as the IRC/Mud type of games (which is how I view Second Life), never been into them. I don’t believe that was a factor in my earlier rants on SL. In fact, I have nothing against people that like those type of games. I love how Centernetworks says “40% off sale“.
What my main point was is that businesses figured they can cash in on anything, even if it doesn’t make sense. The issue is that the weavers that sold this to the big corporations were fans of SL, and nothing more. Great spin job, great spinners of the truth. Sad thing is that these corporations have spent millions setting up a game store front.
Technically Speaking, lesson learned here – Second Life is probably a fun game. That being said – remember – Second Life is a GAME!
