Contrary to most popular belief, you don’t need boat loads of traffic to your site to continually make money on your blog. This site is living proof of that. I won’t go into details on how badly the traffic here is, but let’s just say, even the statistical tracking tools I take with a grain of salt says one thing: Traffic here SUCKS.

It seems like it’s been forever and a day since I have written anything on this blog. The funny thing is that while my statistics on this blog are like bottom cratered, I still continue to receive real money into my PayPal account monthly. In fact I think back to when I started blogging, and had no clue what I was doing or why I was doing it, this blog is making more now then it did back in the day.

Even back in the day when I was manually putting up ~+400 posts in a month (did I really do that?!?), I still wasn’t making much on this blog. Hell, not making much is a nice way of saying – I wasn’t making any money! When I think back, the traffic on here was not that great back then either, another nice way of saying – it was crap on a stick – but I certainly had more traffic on here vs my recent analysis of traffic.

What works on small blogs? It appears either direct ad sales (sweet plug for where I am working at now :) ) by being a premium publisher or using contextual text link advertising is the best bet. Sadly, I don’t qualify to eat our own dog food. While text links seem to be annoying, they do pay off. I’m living proof of that (as well as this blog). Many of you are skeptical, but I always say a picture is worth a thousand words. Since I don’t have the time to type out a dissertation or even a decent blog post in excess of 500 words, here are some pics that prove I’m not lying.

Now that is just for one month, so that doesn’t tell you the whole story. I decided to grab like a screenshot from December ’11 to now, and that tells you a bit more.

You are probably going, well that isn’t that much money totaled up – $192.36 – but let’s break that down. Traffic here has been bottomed out, nil, pretty much bots I figure – with a smattering of live viewers, which are most likely comment spammers. Also coupled with the fact that off the stats I do have, that money came in at no real investment cost to me personally. I haven’t done any blogging here, my other related sites scrape most of their content, auto piloted draws of traffic, and I basically use that money to buy music off of iTunes, rent movies on my Apple TV, and pay for the hosting and domain fee.

Could I push and make more money blogging? Sure, if I really wanted to write all the time and wanted to make my words a vehicle for monetary compensation. For now I figured I’d share with others out there with small blogs, that are sitting around gathering internet dust, that you can still at least make iTunes money with them. Even if you rarely post anymore or even draw much traffic. Making money online isn’t rocket science and it’s basically like anything else, the more you put in, the more you’ll get back out.

I haven’t put in much time to getting my blogs to make a ton, but they basically pay for themselves on auto pilot. That in itself is a nice thing, and coupled with the facts I work in Silicon Valley at a cool startup – can life get any better?

Just a casual observation as noted on several blog posts of late.If you have tweet arguments (is that a real term or did I just make it up?) they can come back to bite you. There are other examples we could share here, but don’t want to stir up crazy people from past tweet discussions that seemed to drag on beyond it’s life span.

Why have I decided to create all these goofy job boards and feeds you might ask. Well it started out as an idea for something funny on one of my other sites, and I figured, why not make some a job board(s) – feeds on a few of my sites.

They became kind of addictive and fun to create. Once I created a few, and actually received some feedback to create another one (for Marketing Jobs), I figured people might enjoy them. Not only enjoy them, but might also have a need for  them.

Hopefully you find them useful, and if not, ignore them or don’t use them at all. If you know of someone out of work and looking for a gig, you may want to send them to the job board – feed that is geared towards what they do or their desired field of work.

Back in the day I thought what Western Sky advertises was called loan sharking. You know the Italian guy you’d meet at the dark corner bar like a Soprano’s episode. How does Western Sky get away with blatantly advertising their loan sharking business? Just something I’m curious about. They flat out say, if you need money now, we are not cheap, but we’ll get it to you. Now say that in an Italian accent like you are from one of those families of NY or NJ.

Doing a little Googling shows that the Western Sky Rates are pretty much in tune to victimizing the person needing $1500 more than anything else. I guess it’s no different than what I use to hear back in the day of when I was in the Navy of $20 for $40, $50 for $75, etc… I guess the full trick in this game is to write it down as such. If you read the above rates sheet, you can see how easily this becomes a legalized loan sharking business.

For the startups out there, I wouldn’t recommend them for your VC/Angel funding round needs, but sometimes some money is better than no money at all. Just be sure you can pay it back, as like the Italians, instead of some broken bones, you might find a few arrows slung your way.

This is almost like the post I wrote a few days back that was entitled – The 3 phrases that annoy Entrepreneurs and/or Startups – except these are statements said to startup companies and entrepreneurs that just generally not only annoy, but ends up having your name (thought, idea) listed on the dev/null or ignore that person list.

While usually not an actual list persay, there is usually a mental note made somewhere. Meaning, if you do one of these items, you probably are on some startup companies list. Of course if you cross the line once or twice, you won’t make the list, but repeated offenses will usually tend to have you one way filed.

1. I’ve waited and my idea hasn’t been implemented, what is wrong with you?

This one is stated a lot in conjunction with #2 below.

Possibly correct in many cases, it still is a very narrow view of what a startup does. Most people think that someone at the company can drop everything just to make the service more pretty. That is not always the case. While people working outside the startup, and general end users may know better in some cases, better isn’t always what is best for the startup.

At times there are outside issues that can’t be publicly revealed to the users of a product. Just think of every suggestion that came into Twitter or Facebook in the past few months, and if they tried to implement them all? Or even a handful? Would the product be just as good, or worse? My bet is the latter. You can’t always please the entire mass while moving forward with the future product offering.

2. Since you aren’t listening to me, I’ll go to company B instead!

Most startup companies care about their customer base. That is why I love working at a startup, and have for a few years now.  Of the startups I have worked for, all of them have bent over backwards to make their user base happy. There is a fine line between happy, and what is good for both. The simple fact though is if you say that statement, you basically are issuing veiled threats (or actual reality). Most people, and me personally, brush off veiled threats.

Another thing to keep in mind, is if your level of frustration with a product or service makes you want to leave to company B, that tells me you have no loyalty in the first place and would go to company B regardless of anything company A did. That also tells me the maturity level is lacking, as stating something like that never does anyone any good.

3. How do you make money with that?

While usually a harmless question, most startup companies don’t share that information publicly. If they did so, then the market would become diluted. The product would be worthless, and no one would benefit. Sometimes it’s a good idea to share how it makes money, but other times, it just isn’t a good idea.

Other times, a partial showing of the cards is in order, but why should a startup tell you exactly how they make money? If you are truly interested in how they make the money with that, why not just “Do it!” and become a startup? Try it and see if you can see how they make that money doing that.

In fact in some respects this one is almost like when someone asks you “How much do you make?” I learned the hard way a long time ago to never reveal that information (to just anyone, in casual chat), even if you are making minimum wage slinging slurpees at a convenient store. To do so can cause lost friendships and more.

Repeatedly asking, after someone politely tells you “None of your business.” is a certain way to have any further conversation with you put on dev/null mode.

4. Arguing (that your point is the right way)

This one seems to make everyone reading this smile. How do I know that?

Well anyone that is reading this has either worked at a startup, works at one currently, or is looking at a message now that has this general point. These people should be made to read or listen to their own drivel. Half the time after looking at these half-baked thoughts, you can actually see people sleeping over it.

Sleeping as in, so bored with the nonsense that is spilling forth that eyes are actually closing in response while a response is being generated. Arguing with a startup is never a good idea. When you think and reveal over and over that your idea is the best since sliced bread, usually will put you on the front burner to dev/null’ville quicker than you can say dev/null.

While the last spam watch talked about the Russian Viagra connection that is starting to run wild, now the Russians are coming up with an insurance scam.

I should say they have come up with an insurance scam. This one involves USAA Insurance company. Feel free to click that last link, that is the real USAA Insurance link located at https://www.usaa.com/.

The scam url looks pretty legit except for the fact if people would read the url – it’s not. When would USAA Insurance decide to really be part of the .ru domain?

Russian Scam USAA URL: http://session1007435139.usaa.com.vsdfile.ru/inet/ent_chform/

Notice how they try to use URL blindness and have the same format as USAA’s site in the long part of the URL? /inet/ent_logon and /inet/ent_chform are very close to being the same string. If you poke around on the USAA site, I’m sure you will find a /inet/ent_chform.

If you are in the landing page business you should always read the PPCHero. I found this older but still great landing page informational post today.

TOPIC 1: Keep It Above the Fold, Stupid!

If you read many PPC blogs, you’re undoubtedly heard this mantra before: “Keep your calls-to-action, headlines, forms, buttons, images and everything else above the fold!” Excessive? Yes. Let me explain: Keeping important elements above the fold is a common tactic thrown around for optimizing landing pages, but for the uninformed it’s the impossible mission. From one level-headed marketer to another, let me lay it out… you can’t fit everything above the fold! What does that mean for you? You have to play it smart. Take stock of the design elements of your landing page and create a list of importance. Consider your target audience, and seriously think about what is most important to them. Taking the time to go through that process will guide you to an intelligent testing process.

All of that being said, the number one priority for your landing page’s design/layout is to have your call-to-action above the fold. This is a must. Your landing page will fail if visitors do not know what their next step is. If you do nothing else, this should be a priority. For some, this is contained in the headline. Simple. For others, your call-to-action is hiding within a button – so the physical button should be above the fold. When selling a specific product, I would strongly urge you to place the image above the fold. When running a strictly lead-generation campaign, I would strongly encourage you to test placing the lead form above the fold. I’ve tested this in a few industries, and it can certainly be a contributing factor in increasing lead-gen conversion rates.

TOPIC 2: Limit Navigation and Limit Confusion

This is probably one of the more debatable tactics for optimizing a PPC landing page. From personal experience, I can say that removing typical website navigation has increased conversion rates on my PPC landing pages. The idea is relatively simple. By removing navigation, you are creating a “sterile” conversion environment. In other words, you are in complete control of what the visitor sees, interacts with and hopefully this will lead them directly to the conversion. If your PPC landing page is just another page on your website – navigation and all – the visitor can browse the website as a whole. Which, in my experience, decreases the likelihood of conversion.

Like I said, this is a debatable tactic. So, in all fairness, I’ll present some of the counter-arguments. Some marketers say that if the website is created in such a way, it won’t matter if they stray from your landing page. The entire website should be designed for conversion, and the visitor will find their way regardless. Another argument is that by stripping a page of navigation, this can act as a deterrent to some visitors – almost leaning towards SPAM. In my experience, this hasn’t been the case, but it is certainly something that you should test.

As an alternative to both, you could create a conversion path. A conversion path gives the visitor options for navigation – all of which are under control in a more complex “sterile” conversion environment. Conversion paths are great for segmenting visitors into much more targeted landing page experiences that can have a truly positive effect on conversion rates.

TOPIC 3: Un-Clutter and Place Value on Whitespace

More times than not when I arrive at a landing page, I’m blown away by the amount of stuff on the page. Stuff is not only ambiguous, it’s bad for conversions. Take stock of the cacophony of design elements on your landing page and ask yourself what is truly important for the user and for the conversion. Chances are you’ll be able to remove a lot of stuff. Clutter on a landing page is confusing for the user and can keep them from finding relevant details and your calls-to-action. Additionally, PPC visitors are often times in a rapid-fire state-of-mind. This means that they’ve been searching through several of your competitor’s PPC ads and landing pages and have come to you for a second opinion (maybe you were #1, but just work with me here). If your landing page is a cluttered mess, they will only give you a few seconds of their time – if they don’t find what they’re searching for, they’re gone. Off to the next landing page.

Users scan the text and take away only certain elements that they use to make a decision if the page is relevant to their goal or not. Clean use of space allows users to scan and absorb key messages.

The design of your landing page should lend itself to quick and simple recognition of the “key messages.” If you have the perfect flash animation that you MUST put on your landing page – ask yourself, “Does this deter from the key message of my landing page?” If you answer yes, remove it and place a little more value on your newfound whitespace.
