A few weeks back, some guy I know hits me up on Facebook messaging and said he wanted to jam. I’ve been playing a lot lately as already noted, and since I pretty much have done the iPod shuffle (basically) I’ve been out figuring out different tunes. Getting the jist of the songs enough to play along, and I’m by no means perfect or anything. The dude asks me for 10 songs, which I started to jot down in a notepad on my phone. I came up with 10 pretty easily and here is the 12 I sent over:

This was back on the 17th of September. I have not heard from him yet, but these would be fun to thrown down acoustically speaking. Two guys on guitars, type of coffee shop thing. Most are one guitar songs, but with two, it would be much easier to sing/play and on some of the more technical ones, easier to have one guitarist concentrate on certain passages. To make the songs passable and all.

I would love to call the project “iPod Shuffle” or something, but I guess that would run into issues of copyright, etc… I did get the idea from my week spent in the #FLA last month (August, early September) visit when I saw a guitarist/singer perform at the Fiddler’s Green Irish pub down there.

I liked it. Now hoping this guy will learn these songs, or the jist of them so we can jam soon. Already building the next 12 songs list. They already include the following: Shinedown – What a Shame, Papa Roach – Scars amongst others. Need to start jotting down what songs for sure.

Я подумал, было бы интересно писать быстро блога на русском языке. Что касается заявления, что выше, я не читать, писать или говорить на любом языке, кроме английского. У меня есть некоторые слабые воспоминания о японской и может рода понимаю, что я помню с момента, когда я был ребенком, растущим в Японии, но это было много, много лун назад.

Теперь thoses, что читать, говорить, писать русский язык может быть оскорблен этой должности, я думаю, что это говорит о многом тому, как современные технологии создали возможность для меня легко написать в Google Translate Россию. Я мог бы также писать по-китайски – простой или традиционной, или даже хорватский, немецкий, испанский и т.д..

При наборе этого и смотреть это волшебно перевод с английского на русский, я думаю, что русский язык является довольно красивый язык. Очень загадочный вид, но эй, это русский! :)

С технической точки зрения, в эту пятницу было очень быстро один, наслаждаться выходные!

This is going to be a quick and ez post about the experiences I went through looking into and researching how to create an Android or iPhone app. More than likely the first, since my site wouldn’t make it past the Apple censor nazi’s, but with Android’s growth exploding in the market, who’s to say if going iPhone first is the best way to reach total market penetration.

The nice thing I found out, and here is a tip for you Android or iPhone app developers, is that there are currently many dev’s out there who are ahead of the game. Instead of just creating the next best app, they are creating the next best place for normal people to create their Android or iPhone app! Better (biz) plan if there ever was one.

Why take job after job, and make “x amount” of money only to compete against other developers who could do it faster? Why not put out a tool and open it up for anyone with a RSS feed to create an app? Much better business, and the competition is small right now in this field. If you are a developer who has been pondering the best way to leverage the app playing field, this may be the one.

In my research, I did ping a few developers that I know and all of them said similar advice. Use the current RSS feed you have and there shouldn’t be a need to have someone write an API at this point. RSS to Android or RSS to iPhone was what I used to search. Here is what I came up with.

1. iSites

This place was already covered on Mashable and other blogs. It’s a nice place and it will create a proper app for you. It does however cost $$$ to do so. Right out of the box. If you have the traffic, and you know you can cover the costs, go this route. I’m sure they have tons of customers. For those that don’t have the traffic or just want a mobile app that they can experiment with, read on.

UPDATE3: See the comment thread between iSites support and this blogger. 1 month FREE, so this might be a viable option even for those not sure on spending the $$$.

2. Majoobi

This is where I created a really quick app for TurboWhiteTrash.

You can read about it here, and load the app here. The nice thing is for a site with not so much traffic like TWT, you can try it for free up to ~25k pageviews I believe. Is it a real app like  you see? Not really, but it does give you a mobile presence and you can gauge whether you need to go to the above company and create the proper app for release, or find a dev that can help you out.

UPDATE: From the comment left below: Actually you can install Majoobi apps on the device and it will look native, what you do is click on the “+” button in Safari (found at the bottom of the screen), click on “Add to home screen” and that will install it on the desktop. What’s cool about this is that you won’t see the Safari browser url or any other panels, the whole thing behaves as a native app :)

UPDATE 2: The fine support crew at Majoobi has sent over a couple of links on how to drop the app to an Android device. For the not so savvy, these 2 links are a must read. Now you can have a native appearing app on your Android device.

Technically Speaking, while maybe not the best solutions, unless you are a crack shot developer who can write an API or even use RSS to create a quick app for Android or iPhone – chances are you will be investigating one or both of the above solutions soon for your mobile app presence.

Having used the iPhone for a few years until an unfortunate drowning experience (for my old iPhone 3G) over the summer, I would consider myself a perfect case example and rattle off 5 reasons people make the switch. These of course are just some of the reasons, but I’ll try to pin point them for you. They are from my personal experience at making that switch. They probably do apply to others who have either thought of, or actually did the switch.

1. Android devices are cheaper

Now cheaper isn’t always better, but you can’t argue with an Android $99 tablet that is available at Walgreens via online ordering. Now of course there is the fiasco known as the Kmart special Augen Gentouch78 Tablet from the summer, but in general, the Android devices have no price point. Also, it appears that Augen is re-tooling and getting ready to release some better devices this fall. In fact it appears to be a lot of latte they are grinding up for new choices.

Now iPhone aficionados may argue that iPhone 4 or iOS 4 is so much superior to the 3G experience. Is it really? Or is it just a ploy by Apple to have you shuck out another ~$500-$1000 on another piece of Apple hardware. Android phones come in many shapes and styles. There is no one size fits all mentality as you find with Apple’s offering of their product line.

Don’t for a minute think I’m an Apple hater. I’m not, in fact I’m typing this post on my Macbook, which I do love. That makes me far from an Apple hater. More reasons.

2. More apps available for the Market

While at first the iTunes and Apple store had a huge advantage on the apps available, times have changed. The Android Market is full of just about every app that you can garner via the iTunes and Apple store. Most major social media type of apps are available on both platforms, and the Android app sometimes is superior to the iOS version of the same app.

And if your game is music, Android has that. In fact I downloaded a pretty addictive little sequencer program from Mikrosonic called RD3. It’s the demo version, but I wouldn’t mind getting the full version. Quite fun.

3. The no sync factor

This was probably the number 1 selling point for me personally switching to an Android phone. The no sync with a laptop factor. At first it was very cool I guess to sync your iPhone with your laptop and iTunes. Then it started to get old, and when you had to download to update your iPhone, it could take hours to backup, sync, reboot, load, sync, sync, sync. You get the point.

Why should you have to have a laptop to have a phone? I mean isn’t the iPhone suppose to be a cell phone? It’s suppose to be a smart phone with cool apps on it of course, but at the end of the day it’s suppose to still function as a phone. Make and take calls on a number assigned to you. Right?

4. Freedom to choose

Touched on a bit in the first point above, but the freedom to choose a device and not be locked into what the software and hardware manufacturer gives you is a nice thing. This fact came abundantly clear to me when I lost my iPhone to a drowning experience.

I had exactly 2 choices. I could do a slight upgrade and lock in for another 2 years with a iPhone 3GS. I could wait or put my name on a waiting list for an iPhone 4 to come in. Or I could spend the additional ~$100 to buy an iPhone 4 with 32gb vs the 16gb ~$100 cheaper model. One other point, the supply demand factor was one of the points that really perturbed me. This was in mid to late August I was trying to replace my iPhone with an iPhone 4. It was like they thought they had me by the you know what, and they didn’t.

Or I could just say, I’m tired of playing the iOS domination game and check out something new. Something available. Something just as powerful, and touchscreen friendly. That’s what I did. I joined the Samsung Galaxy S group of phones. Since I’m still with AT&T, it’s the Captivate. Has a touch screen just like the iPhone, all class, only buttons are the volume on the left and the power on on top.

Also clear is how Apple really plays the game by basically eliminating any competition by being the software and hardware maker. That’s another topic for the justice department and lawyers that are paid much more than I am.

5. Education

Once you learn more about Android, and step away from the Apple kool-aid for a bit, you start to see clearly that the phones available are just as good, you have more choices, and tablets are coming in droves in the next few quarters. Android is a very capable OS once you look into it.

In fact, I’m at the point of thinking about picking up a tablet device. The Samsung Galaxy Tab looks very nice. Would I like a Galaxy Tab or an iPad? The iPad wouldn’t be a bad buy, and with the availability at major retailers such as Target, it would be an option. The only thing that deters me is some of my above points – price and the sync factor.

Technically Speaking, I’m not an Apple iOS hater, but feel more like I’m willing to experiment with capable equipment/devices that are not Apple. The same way that I use to play around with Linux when Windows was the dominate OS in the world I worked in at the time.

In some ways you tend to wonder what happens once this Win7 phone goes full launch over the next few months. Will they have a place in some people’s pocketbooks? Time will tell. Don’t forget that at one point in time, the only smart phone player out there was the RIM Blackberry. While they still have a sentimental hold on the business world, the key-less smart phones are starting to make in roads rather quickly.

This list is from some of the more intriguing ways I have personally seen people use Twitter.

Whether it’s via the iPhone, an Android device, or someone sitting in front of their laptop or iPad, tweeting your thoughts in real time in less than 140 characters can become a way to communicate with the masses. It can also become a way to just simply piss off the masses (ie: followers) a lot quicker.

1. The only thing you do is RT (re-tweet)

There are times that you find something so interesting that you have to reshare it with your followers. That is usually done with giving some attribution to the original publisher of the interesting link. The bad thing is that more often than not, the people you follow post more interesting items than you. No big deal, you just click re-tweet and off you go. Or do you?

Now this is probably the number one item that everyone abuses. The power of the RT. It’s also like the number one item that is ignored or sent to the Twitter Dev >> Null file rather quickly. It can also have you dropped rather quickly from being a followed person. You can lose much of your Twitter power as a known RT’er – or – you can become known as just another bot spammer type of tweeter.

Being an actual person, you probably do not want to be known as a bot or spammer.

Instead of constantly RT’ing, maybe you should do a /cc or /via at the end of the tweet to give credit to the original tweeter of the link, or the item. This is one small fix or change to my tweeting habits I started doing when I found my twitter account overloaded with RT’s. That is one way to make sure you don’t become a RT’er all the time – monitor your own twitter stream from time to time!

We are all guilty of doing this, so don’t feel bad that you violated this #1 item!

2. Never engaging your followers when they @ or DM you

This is probably the worst thing you can do. I don’t care if you are a celebrity or have a pseudo tweeter running your tweets, you should somehow respond to your @ or DM items. People like QuestLove who I happened to run into one time in NYC in an elevator, are for real people that take the time to tweet and engage their audience.

Not saying that you must respond to every @ or DM, but you should try to respond to the ones that touch you directly. If you are a celebrity, you should make your fans feel like you are in touch and not above them. Even if you are a pseudo internet famous celeb, you should try to reach out and connect more often than not.

This is probably close to ranking up there with the RT’er only tweeter. That is why this has to be the #2 item on the list of 3 ways to piss off your Twitter followers. Don’t engage? Expect to start in that long downward spiral of losing your fans.

3. Being an affiliate who uses Twitter to spam affiliate links only

If you are an affiliate and you want to use your twitter account to spam with, you should probably go out and sign up for a separate account just for that purpose. Using your personal Twitter account for only affiliate links will have you marked as an affiliate spammer. Your links and your thoughts will be ignored, and most likely your followers are only other affiliates or even worse, bots.

Remember, bots don’t click links, and bots don’t buy your promoted products. Also in that same thought process, most affiliates don’t click other affiliate links. They are usually all self consumed on their own products they are pushing. More than likely being an affiliate on Twitter is not quite as easy you think it is. If you are an affiliate, maybe you should stick to mass e-mail campaigns vs mass tweet campaigns?

Technically Speaking, those are the 3 proven ways to lose or piss off your Twitter followers. There are more, but these 3 happen to sit at the top of my thought list this morning. The below is a screenshot of what the e-mail looks like. It looks almost identical to a real iTunes e-mail.

Now many of you are probably rolling your eyes and saying, “Why bother writing this post, and I’m not that stupid to click this!” This post is just an informational post for those that might freak out at seeing a $795.99 iTunes bill. How would you really feel if you do a lot of iTunes purchases, and you see this? Would you all of sudden automatically click and think someone hacked your iTunes account?

Again, you may not be that stupid to click, but you never can tell – and if you are not that stupid – at least have the sense to pass it on to people that you know might click. Look at the above, and look at the below now:

Technically Speaking, I’m not trying to insult your intelligence, but if you (after reading this post and viewing the pictures) rant and rave on twitter or Facebook about “boo-hoo, someone hacked my iTunes account… ” – well hey smart ass, you just were warned! :)

I re-opened the Embargo Zone as of late yesterday. This is a general question out to my readers. How many readers do I have? Probably zero at this point as I have posted very rarely lately, but this is a thought that I think many that work as I do would like an answer too. At least they should have an opinion to share via the comments or in some way? Most of the people I interact with regularly work online either from a shared space office, out of their home, or even 35,000 feet up on some airplane.

How do you hit the OFF switch on your lightbulb? Do you hit the OFF switch? Or are you on 24/7, connected at all time no matter what. iPhone, Black(crack)berry, Macbook only inches from your hands, bluetooth in your ear, while typing in two spots simultaneously! Technically Speaking, I’m back from NYC and the short lived cubicle life, back in the STL for the holidays, and picking up new work for my 2010 dance card.

Wow! The month of April has sped right on by. I guess that is what happens when you have one full time gig and a couple of part time gigs going on. So here are some quick items that just ran by me today that I wanted to share

- PercentMobile – Grab your invites if there are any left! I talked to David the CEO late this afternoon and he opened up some more invites, but those could be gone! You really need to know what your % Mobile is. And don’t forget to follow the twitter @mobileanalytics

To get a sense of some of the data you would see, check out this report for FourSquare, the mobile social network that MG is in love with. Not surprisingly, 76.5 percent of all of its traffic is mobile. Although it comes as an iPhone app, you can also access it via a mobile browser. The most popular device accessing it that way is not the iPhone (since most people use the app), but rather the Blackberry (9.9%), followed by HTC’s G1 Android phone (9.6%), followed by two more Blackberry models (8.9% and 7.4%), and then the iPhone (7.3%), and then another Blackberry (7.1%). Guess which platform FourSquare is going to develop an app for next? Yup, the Blackberry.

- EGolfGroup and Innovative Business Golf Solutions join forces to launch the Business Golf Country Club – Nice to see Scot getting this social network of his going quite well from what I read and hear. Also now they have the golf heaven connection, which I understand is anywhere from Palm Springs, CA – Sedona, AZ.

Literally in seconds after I posted that below post, @jamievaron was paying attention. She just showed and proved to me that she deserves the J-O-B @twitter. In fact, if I had influence over @ev and @biz, my advice would be to snap her up before someone else grabs her. Talent like this will get away really fast.

Friends On Fire, the new Facebook app that launched earlier today based off of the Yahoo! Fire Eagle. Along with the official Yahoo! blog post, there was really good coverage of the new app.

In addition to Friends on Fire, we’re also launching a new way to update Fire Eagle — a Firefox extension that adds a button to your toolbar. With one click, your location is instantly shared with your trusted friends on your favorite services.

I haven’t had time to try the Firefox Fire Eagle extension yet, as it’s been a busy Friday – wanted to write this post hours ago! Glad it was well covered.

Of course, if you’re out and about, you’re not necessarily going to be hauling around your computer with you. Instead, you’ll want to grab one of the mobile Fire Eagle updaters from Yahoo’s Gallery. These apps include simple mobile updaters like Fire Fone for the iPhone as well as more robust social networking apps like Brightkite.

I haven’t tried the mobile yet either. Now here is one thing that did come up in discussion in a call I had earlier today. There are a lot of 35 and older people online. In fact, here is a thought for you – most people that age and older would rather have a hidemenow.com function vs a “Here I am! Here I am!” mobile all the time find me everywhere network. Not saying there is failure here, but basically – you are not 23 years old forever is all I’m saying!

While Foursquare and Whrrl may have a good time this weekend at SXSW, how will it translate into the real outside of SXSW coming in the following weeks.

Just in time for SXSW, Dennis Crowley, one of the original developers of Dodgeball, has released a new location-aware social app (iTunes link) for the iPhone: Foursquare.

One of the main issues of Foursquare that I see out of the box is limited support or limited areas as described.

The app currently features a database for 12 of the larger metropolitan areas in the U.S., including Boston, New York, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, and Austin. We expect that Foursquare will add data for more cities in the next few months. If a certain restaurant or bar is not in Foursquare’s database, you can also add your own.

Like I said – after Austin and SXSW this week – what about the real world post SXSW?

Whrrl, I just never found it easy or fun. Maybe that has changed in the 2.0 version as outlined in this post, but still what about Loopt?

You’ve got options when it comes to iPhone apps designed to help you capture moments in time, but the Whrrl v2.0 iPhone app hopes to help you combine photos, stories, and your location with the photos and stories of your friends for a collective storytelling experience.

While there is even more written about Yahoo! and Fire Eagle, and Friends On Fire.

Despite the hype they get, location-based services have yet to catch on in the mainstream.

That above quote is the main issue of location based social nets in one sentence.

Of the two, Friends on Fire for Facebook is the more consumer-friendly.

Facebook Decides To Be A Commune – After writing this one, I was sort of thinking, “That’s pretty damn good!” – and when I was linked later, I was quite pleased others had a similar line of thinking. Although as I watched Mark Zuckerberg this morning on Today, I was hoping, “Man, I hope he didn’t see that and make some rude comment about communes and hippies!” And if he did, well – that would have been even cooler! :)

Yahoo Re-Org Round-Up – Rizzn masterfully sorted out the mess known as the Yahoo re-organization memo(s) or rather, we found out that the new CEO likes to memo out the employees! Another skillful surgery through the massive amounts of Yahoo coverage, Rizzn’fied.
